3 Chinese Shoppers Die In Stampede To Buy Cooking Oil!

(from Japantoday.com) - China has banned limited-period sales promotions in stores after three people died in a stampede as they scrambled to buy cut-price cooking oil, state media reported Tuesday. The accident happened amid increasing attention in China to rising food prices, which are the main factor fuelling increased inflation.

Premier Wen Jiabao was widely quoted in state-run media Tuesday as saying the government will take action to stabilize prices and ensure supply. The Commerce Ministry issued an urgent circular ordering local governments to ban fixed-period promotions in stores after the accident in Chongqing in southwest China last weekend, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.
