Suspected Dead Couple Appear At Press Conference

A Melbourne doctor and his wife have arrived home from holiday to find homicide detectives about to hold a press conference into their suspected deaths.

Police and the media had gathered at the home of William "Roy" Ostell, 63 and his wife Heather, 58, amid growing fears for their safety after their daughter reported them missing.

So when they turned into the driveway on their Narre Warren property today in their "missing" 1975 Kombi, their daughter Angela, police and the press were stunned.

It turns out the Ostells had decided to go for a Labour Day long weekend holiday break at Lakes Entrance, arranging for their dog and ponies to be cared for by a neighbour. They told their other daughter Melanie about their plans but were unable to contact Angela.

"Where have you been?" Angela yelled as the Kombi pulled up, leaving her parents dumbfounded about all the fuss.

Mrs Ostell said she and her husband, a local GP, were sorry for all the trouble they had inadvertently caused.

"They pulled up the back deck looking for our bodies," she said.

"We had decided on Friday morning (to have a break) and we just let a couple of people know."

Police said the front door of the house was found open and Mrs Ostell said police could blame her husband for that.

"We just wanted to get out on the road and to get out of here," she said.

She said Angela had been upset by the whole episode.

"I'll have to make my peace with her," Mrs Ostell said.
