Big Cat Sightings Investigated In Palisades, New York

Authorities say they're investigating unconfirmed sightings of one or possibly two large cat-like animals prowling the New York suburbs.

Residents of Palisades have reported seeing what they say looked like black panthers over the past week, including at Tallman Mountain State Park. Black panthers are a color variant of several larger cat species, such as jaguars.

Orangetown Detective Lt. Jim Brown says investigators haven't found any signs of the animals. He says they found "some prints" but are unsure whether they belong to a large cat.

DEC spokeswoman Wendy Rosenbach says the agency has never found evidence of large cats like cougars or mountain lions in the lower Hudson Valley.

Palisades is about 30 miles north of New York City on the west side of the Hudson River.
