Just the Facts?: 'Winged Enigma' Examined Further -- 'Missing Time' Event -- Happy New Year!

'Winged Enigma' examined further

Cryptozoologist / researcher Dale Drinnon has looked deeper into my post Winged Enigma that referenced sightings of a cryptid bird-like creature in the Patapsco State Park river valley near Ilchester, MD.

Drinnon states: This is a one off event describing a creature seen in Maryland over a couple of years. Since this creature is clearly diurnal, it has to be a transient and may have come up from South America . No such creature has actually been reported in North America .

What is troublesome is that none of the descriptions described the beak at all. That pretty well eliminates an over specialized shape such as a raptor or its like. If any thing the weight of the descriptions is toward a bulkier bird able to eat grubs and some vegetative matter.

One report noted that the wings were leathery. In fairness, bird wings are also leathery but covered with feathers. This bird is a solid flier with obvious pin feathers. The whole observation allows us to rethink the available possibilities for large birds. Purportedly the pterodactyl lacked feathers but that seems less and less likely. However a membrane wing covered as needed with small feathers makes sense on the pterodactyl configuration.

The Chinese and Asian reports suggest a homeland for this particular transient. Yet I am still seeing a large diurnal bird with a very long apparent range. Perhaps it relies on fishing like the pterodactyl. We have to get it here some how.

In the event this is at lest a very rare solitary bird that travels great distances and avoids humanity by roosting in forests and possibly flying high. Yet flying low may actually be a better route for a bird that does not hunt and perhaps fishes and is comfortable in the forest.

The forest in which the observations were made is a river valley and is well penetrated by human activity. Observation may well have been inevitable there.

In conclusion, Drinnon states: In this case, the dimensions are in the Thunderbird range although on the modest side (10 to 20 foot wingspan is the lower end of wingspan estimates and some estimates go up to a 35 foot wingspan or more. 15 to 25 would be seen more often and would definitely seem the more likely estimates of the size) but the coloration seems a mite gaudy. The ordinary reports would say simply black wings and a red head, but the feathers are also sometimes said to have a sort of irridescent sheen to them and could look bluish or greenish from that. Oddly enough, the more colourful Thunderbird reports nearly always eminate from the EAST Coast. Some reports say leathery wings and others say feathery: these reports DO say feathery. In the case quoted above, the suggestion it was a peacock seems too forced: it was like a peacock except for the head and tail does not leave any distinctively peacock features in between. The fact that the shape of the beak is not specifies of course in itself means nothing: but then it is difficult to judge how sharp the edge of a bird's beak is from a distance. The large talons are on the other hand suggestive of a predatory bird. In this case we seem to have a more or less ordinary large condor-like bird from the description, only the fancies of observers attribute pterosaur or dragon features onto it. Or even phoenix or peacock features.

Best Wishes, Dale D.

'Missing Time' event

My friend & I left Flagstaff, AZ heading south towards Phoenix on I-17 @ about 1:20pm. At 2pm I was in the far left (fast) lane & joked with my friend about the Sedona 'wanna-be' "Hollywood" sign on the mini-mountain to my right. My friend said "that's the landmark just prior to the exit we needed to get off of. He told me to move over to the far right lane. At that moment my car radio went to static. Since I needed to pay attention to the traffic & move to the far right lane I asked him to tune the radio while looking at it. I looked up in to my rear view mirror only to see 5 white compact cars behind me. I mentioned that it was odd asking him "where did all of the traffic go?" All 5 cars passed me on the left. I noticed all 5 cars had Nevada plates. A few seconds later I saw a freeway sign that said Kingston - 50 miles. I asked my friend "isn't Kingston near Laughlin, NV?" I came to a crest of freeway only to view Laughlin which bordered Bullhead City, CA. At that point I realized I was now heading West on I-40. Freaked out, I pulled over & we both paced the side of the road trying to figure out how we got there. We got back in the car & turned around heading East on I-40 & came upon a van. I honked & my friend asked the driver what time it was. It was 5:30pm, 3 hours & 20 minutes had passed. To this day, I've heard 3 other stories of missing time on this stretch of road, one of which was from a trucker. Truckers had to log there time & miles. This confirmed we were not crazy. It's been nearly 18 years since this incident. Neither of us experienced any physical or psychological trauma. I would like to know if anyone else can't relate to what happened to us or explain it. I'm still curious. Thank you. - MUFON CMS

Sea foam buries town

Click for video

A thick white blanket settled gently on the seaside town of Cleveleys near Blackpool on Wednesday, but this was no seasonal dusting of snow from above. The Environment Agency dispatched officers to Princess Promenade to gather evidence as gobs of foam blew in from the sea and smothered streets, cars and houses.

The foam is whipped up by strong winds once or twice a year along the town's seafront and vanishes soon after, a spokeswoman for the agency said. Lab tests on samples collected in earlier years have found no signs of pollution. Decomposing algal matter is the prime suspect for the mysterious lather.

"It appears to be naturally occurring. When the tides and winds combine to churn dead algal matter up from the bottom of the sea, it produces this foam, which is quite dramatic," the spokeswoman said. Officers visited Cleveleys on Wednesday and again on Thursday to collect more specimens to analyse. The results of the tests are expected to confirm the foam is natural and not caused by detergent in seawater or other pollution.

By studying the foam, the agency hopes to learn how and why it forms and so predict when the froth will return. "If we can understand what conditions cause it, that will help us predict it and help local authorities involved in the cleanup operations," the spokeswoman said. - guardian

NOTE: if you have ever owned a large reef aquarium with a protein skimmer (which I have), then you'll understand the foam. The sea foam is a build up of proteins, fats, natural waste, etc. that surfaces in saltwater...and under the right conditions it can get very heavy. Lon

Meat-eating panda caught on camera

A camera at a Chinese nature reserve has spied a wild panda eating meat.

Pandas spend most of their days eating bamboo.

Staff at the Wanglong Nature Reserve in southwest Sichuan province set up the camera after noticing dead animals with chew marks.

In the footage taken on Nov. 9 by an infrared camera, the giant panda is seen eating a dead gnu. It was not known if the panda had killed the animals.

The Pingwu County forestry bureau says the panda appears to be healthy and strong.

Conservation group WWF says only about 1 percent of a panda's diet is meat or plants that aren't bamboo.

China is set to launch its once-a-decade panda census, state media reported, as it tries to determine how many of the endangered animals live in the wild amid efforts to boost numbers. - msnbc
